She may be blessed with the kind of shapely legs and waistline women half her age would envy, but Gillian says she isnât obsessive about her size 10 figure at all â" in fact she believes this is one of the reasons why sheâs able to stay so trim. That, and having the right mental attitude.
âI always tell my daughter Jessie, who is 20: âThis is not a dress rehearsal â" youâre not going to have this day againâ.
Age is just a number and as long as Iâm fit and healthy and enjoying myself, Iâm happy.
Perhaps thatâs what helps me to look a certain way. I like to have fun,â explains the actress.
And she adopts this approach when it comes to exercise as well, going out for long power walks with her sister so she can catch up on gossip while she burns calories.
Gillian loves taking Zumba classes, too â" the must-try fitness craze.
âIâve always looked after myself fitness-wise,â she says. âAnd Iâve always exercised and get frustrated when I canât. I love power walking.
"Iâm on tour at the moment and my sister Kim and I exercise in the park, which is great. When I get back to my dressing room, I get out my weights from my tour bag and do those for a bit. It all helps!
âI started doing Zumba classes three or four times a week about a year ago and I love it.
"Itâs toned me up all over and Iâve lost weight from my legs, waist and hips.
"I put a little denim miniskirt on the other day because it was so warm â" something I would never have worn before.
"But my legs are much Âbetter since I started doing Zumba.â
When sheâs not on tour, Gillian also keeps in shape with regular sessions in her home gym, where she has a bike and a running Âmachine.
But it isnât only regular exercise that helps keep the former EastEnders and The Bill actress looking much younger than her years.
A healthy diet goes a long way, too. Gillian starts each day with a cup of hot water and fresh lemon to cleanse her system, eats plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and also limits her alcohol intake.
âI drink lots of water throughout the day,â she adds. âI love salad, fruit and vegetables and chicken.
"We donât eat many potatoes in our house â" Iâm a fruit bat and âveggieholicâ. I donât like to eat late unless Iâm going out for dinner with someone.
"But I will have a glass of wine when I go out with friends. I donât deny myself, I try and do things sensibly.â
And itâs no good having a youthful eight-and-a-half-stone body without the face to match, so Gillian is just as scrupulous about her skincare regime.
She uses a secret range of products to keep wrinkles at bay â" Harley Street Skin Careâs StemCellution.
Their Anti-Ageing Serum is a concentrated skin rejuvenator with peptides and powerful antioxidants that help to rebuild the skin.
âIâve been using it for years,â she explains. âI know Lesley Reynolds Khan, who created the Anti-Ageing range, very well.
"Sheâs been Âlooking after my skin for 15 years. Her Anti-Ageing Serum on my frown lines and crowsâ feet really plumps up the skin.â
Itâs clear her healthy eating, fitness and skincare regime has worked wonders so far. But Gillian admits she wouldnât rule out turning to the knife like some of her celebrity counterparts in the future if she needed to.
âThe time may come when I need surgery but at this moment, Iâm not interested,â she says. âIâd be scared to have a face-lift â" especially with the job I do.
âI just want to look good naturally for as long as I can. I would hate to look in the mirror and see someone else looking back!â
