Rihanna has revealed that she had an exhausted, emotional breakdown while recording her latest album at the end of last year, which led to a furious crying session in her hotel room. The star opened up about the dramatic night â" which took place after she was rushed to hospital and hooked up to an IV drip in Sweden â" in a new video interview that came out last night.
Spookily, this video interview â" filmed months ago â" was released as Rihanna was going through a similar experience in New York. On Monday night, Rihanna tweeted a picture of herself connected to a drip in hospital, with the singer reportedly being treated for âexhaustion and dehydrationâ.
And now Rihanna has explained the trauma she experienced the last time she fell ill in November â" which led t o her being rushed to hospital and cancelling a tour date in Sweden.
In this new interview titled âRoad To Talk That Talkâ â" recorded at the beginning of the year â" Rihanna was asked how hard she worked on her sixth album.
She said: âIt was the best sh*t ever, it was some rock star sh*t. This is the craziest schedule Iâve ever been on in my entire life.
âOne morning I woke up and started crying so hard. I finally just got to my bed from the IV [drip] and I was just like, âGood I can actually get to sleep tonightâ because we stayed up [all nightâ and I finished [the album] at 5pm the day before.
âSo now Iâm like âOne good night of rest.â I get in bed and it must have been two hours in before my phone started going off.â
Rihanna explained that she then flew into a brief, furious rage, because her management werenât respecting the fact she sheâd just been hooked up to a drip as she recovered from a serious bout of the flu.
The 24 year old said: âI was so frustrated I kept ignoring the phone. Every time it would go off but every time I would ignore it. But it would be another burden on my shoulders âcause I know it has to get done.â
âI know Iâm sick but Iâm the only person who can get it done so it was so frustrating so I was angry. I was so angry, I was so overwhelmed that I was sick it felt crazy.
âI started crying. I cried for 10 minutes really, really hard in my pillow. It was aggressive. I donât cry loads. If I cry itâs because Iâm very angry and I canât do anything about it, because Iâve run into a dead end thatâs when the tears would come down. But this time I needed to hear it, I almost wanted to punch somebody.â
But after a good 10 minute cry, Rihanna realised that no one else was able to do her job, so she âgot up, showered and started to workâ.
She said: âI thought, âthey donât have a choice. Iâm the only person they can get answers from and there was nothing I could do about itâ.
âBut I was so overwhelmed and the emails coming in were so inconsiderate. Everything that was going on with me [with the drip] was complete disregard with everything that had just happened prior.â
Her gobby mate in the background adds: âShe was still bleeding from the IV and it was all just swiped. She was ill and not a day of rest. Hooked up to an IV and she was still working.â
But this story has a happy ending (sort of), with Rihanna saying that she was glad she went through the difficult times, because it made the album Talk That Talk worth it.
She explained: âWhen I got the copies in my hand, it was so worth it. I would never take it back. At times I wished things could have been different and easier but then I didnât really care when I got the album. The fact it was so difficult, the album feels so much better.â
